What is Litz wire?

The term litz wire originates from Litzendraht (coll. Litze), German for braided/stranded wire or woven wire.

  • Litz wires are stranded single conductors which are used
    • high flexibility is required (bare litz wires)
    • high frequency applications (HF litz wires).
  • Depending on the customer requirements, the shape of the litz wire can be
    • round
    • rectangluar

Litz Wire Theory

For optimum performance, the Litz wire constructions are made with individually insulated strands. Common magnet wire film insulations such as: polyvinylformal, polyurethane, polyurethane/nylon, solderable polyester, solderable polyester/nylon, polyester/polyamide-imide, and polyimide are normally used.

The outer insulation and the insulation on the component conductor may be servings or braids of nylon, cotton or fiberglass. Polyester, heat sealed polyester, polyimide and PTFE tape wraps along with extrusions of most thermoplastics are also available as outer insulation if the applications dictate special requirements for voltage breakdown or environmental protection.
